What is SMS? The Short Message Service, as defined within the GSM digital mobile phone standard, has several unique features: With SMS the mobile phone user is able to create short messages via mobile phones. A single short message can be up to 160 characters in case of Latin characters and 70 characters in case of Arabic characters. The SMS is a store and forward service, short messages are not sent directly from sender to recipient. Short messages are always sent via an SMS Center, supported by mobile operators.
